Tears of the Sun – Starring Bruce Willis

Posted by the editors on Sunday, 25 December 2011

Tears of the Sun (2003)  Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day (2001), Brooklyn’s Finest (2010)), starring Bruce Willis (Pulp Fiction (1994), Unbreakable (2000), Sin City (2005), and many others), Monica Bellucci and others.  Tears of the Sun, a war film, follows a squad of U.S. Navy SEALs, led by the grimly charismatic Bruce Willis as Lieutenant Waters, in their attempt to rescue an American doctor, played by Monica Bellucci, and three missionaries in civil war-torn Nigeria, amidst the horrors of ethnic cleansing.  Short on dialogue, and character development, Tears of the Sun is full of atmosphere: shadows, ceaseless rain, lush vegetation, mud.  Willis’ Lt. Waters is a seasoned, determined military professional who, faced with the massacre of innocent civilians in this genocidal west African civil war, is moved to disobey orders, with inevitable dire consequences for many, including his dedicated squad of hard, but emotionally vulnerable men.  As good as Willis is, and however strong the cinematography, the weak screenplay and predictable events, especially toward the end, as well as the poor acting by the apparently talentless Monica Bellucci, drag the film down enormously.  Nevertheless, for the atmosphere, and the fans of the talented, squint-eyed, stubble-bearded Bruce Willis, Tears of the Sun may be worth watching.  It’s a shame its potential for a dark, brooding, emotional drama were not more fully realised. Training Day – Starring Denzel Washington (Oscar for Best Actor) & Ethan Hawke

Posted by the editors on Wednesday, 21 December 2011

Training Day (2001)  Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Tears of the Sun (2003), Shooter (2007)), starring Denzel Washington (Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), Inside Man (2006), American Gangster (2007)) and Ethan Hawke (Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), Total Recall (2012))with Eva MendesDr. DreSnoop DoggMacy Gray and others.  In Training Day, a brutal, tense police thriller set in the gang-lands of contemporary Los Angeles, Denzel Washington is magnificent in the role of Alonzo Harris, a charming, violent and intensely corrupt undercover narcotics detective, who is eventually victim of his own over-reaching confidence and brutal methods, a portrayal for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor; Washington’s virtuosity as he teases, threatens, persuades, teaches and abuses almost all at the same time, is impressive indeed.  Ethan Hawke is very good as Jake Hoyt, not exactly the totally naive newcomer, yet in training with the corrupt Harris (Washington), and shocked, disgusted, confused and abused by Harris and eventually, unable to tolerate the lawlessness and physical menace, reacts by reaching back and reconnecting to his own morality.  Training Day has, for the most part, an authentic sounding script with some quite colorful charactisations by a group of well-known musicians and supporting actors, and some fine directing on the part of Antoine Fuqua. Though the final third of the film is perhaps a bit less accomplished, Training Day is a sharp, tense and gritty thriller, well worth watching. (PR)

American Gangster – Starring Russell Crowe & Denzel Washington

Posted by the editors on Monday, 28 November 2011

American Gangster (2007)(DVD) Directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Robin Hood (2010)), starring Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind (2001), State of Play (2009)) and Denzel Washington (Glory (1989), Training Day (2001), Inside Man (2006)), with Josh Brolin (In the Valley of Elah (2007), No Country for Old Men (2007), Milk (2008), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010)), Ruby Dee (A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Do the Right Thing (1989)), John Hawkes (excellent in Winter’s Bone (2009)), Cuba Gooding Jr. (As Good as It Gets (1997), Pearl Harbor (2001)) and others.  A crime drama, based loosely on the life of Frank Lucas, a large-scale Harlem drug dealer in the late 1960s and early 70s.  Aside from questions of historical veracity, after all the film is not a documentary, American Gangster is a consummate work:  The acting is excellent on the part of virtually all the cast, Ridley Scott’s directing is superb, the care taken in the set and context design is close to perfect, the writing is sharp, the music apt.  The screenplay, written by Stephen Zaillian, after many workings over by others, fascinates in its details and in its counterpoint between good, evil, morality, family and isolation, temptation and determination.  American Gangster is an excellent film that merits watching, and owning, and is all the more interesting in repeat viewings.
