Pop Rides the News Cycle – Andy Warhol as Precursor to Twitter & Facebook

Posted by the editors on Saturday, 22 October 2011

Holland Cotter has written a superb and insightful article entitled “Pop Rides the News Cycle” in the Art & Design section of The New York Times, looking at the work, and person, of Andy Warhol, his gimlet-eyed perceptions of the integration of news, commerce and art, and two exhibitions currently on view in the U.S. capitol, “Warhol: Headlines” at the National Gallery of Art and (through 2 January 2012) “Andy Warhol: Shadows,” (through 15 January 2012) at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.  Astounding.  Sharp, concise, deep, and clear.  A must-read, whether you can get to D.C. to view the shows, or not.

Excellent, but brief, slideshow, here.

Our favorite Roberta Smith has written another excellent, perceptive article entitled “Appetite for New and Next New” in the Art & Design section of The New York Times offering a further, and moving, look at this excellent exhibition of, not only, Pop Art, but Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism, to name just a few of those so-called “-isms”.  Includes a nice photo of the installation (shown above) and a slideshow.  See our previous post on the exhibition  for more on this amazing show at the Acquavella Galleries in New York, “Incredible Pop Art at Acquavella Galleries”.

Fred Kaplan has written an article entitled “Showing a Couple’s Eye for Art (and Money)” in the Art & Design section of The New York Times (online) discussing the exhibition at Acquavella Galleries (18 East 79th Street,New York, through 27 May 2010) entitled “Robert and Ethel Scull, Portrait of a Collection” featuring 44 works from the Scull’s collection of absolutely breath-taking Pop Art major works.  Quite simply, a must.
