* The Expendables – Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li & Mickey Rourke

The Expendables (2010) – Directed by Sylvester Stallone and starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li,  Mickey Rourke, Bruce WillisArnold SchwarzeneggerDolph Lundgren and others.  This unabashed action film with quite a few of the great action stars old and new, follows a group of elite, and perhaps a bit worn out, mercenaries on a mission to Central America.  And though it received a mixed critical reception, it did quite well at the box office.  And for reason.  As one could expect, and even hope, for this sort of film, there’s an A to Z of automatic weapons, fiery explosions, and bone-breaking hand to hand combat and it offers a tender pleasure to see the grandfathers of contemporary action films together, wrinkles and all, giving it a good go.  Of course, and being rather kind, the story isn’t much, but that’s not the point in films of this genre, is it.  With all its exploding heads, and other flying body parts, The Expendables is not for the weak at heart, or those who won’t suspend their moral judgement, almost a non sequitur when it comes to this sort of film.  Nevertheless, for a testosterone-filled action film, with at least one moment of soul searching, in an excellent scene with Mickey Rourke,  The Expendables could be worth watching. * The Mechanic – Starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster, with Donald Sutherland

The Mechanic (2011) Directed by Simon West (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)), starring Jason Statham (The Transporter (2002), The Italian Job (2003), Crank: High Voltage (2009)), Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma (2007)), with Donald Sutherland.  This violent action thriller, a remake of the 1972 film of the same name starring Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent, follows a professional assassin, or mechanic, as he eliminates, with efficiency, one target after another.  With its occasional touch of a certain humour, its fiery explosions, not to mention the use of all sorts of other weaponry, and ensuing abundant carnage, The Mechanic is not a film for everyone.  However, for the pleasure of watching Statham in action, and if one is willing to suspend moral judgement, of course, then The Mechanic, though far from a masterpiece of the genre, may be worth watching. Closer

Theatrical release poster

Closer, (2004), (DVD), directed by Mike Nichols starring Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman (1990), Erin Brockovich (2000), Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve (2001, 2004), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Eat Pray Love (2010) and others), Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Cold Mountain (2003), My Blueberry Nights (2007)), Natalie Portman (My Blueberry Nights (2007), Black Swan (2010, for which Portman won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the BAFTA Award for her lead performance), Clive Owen (The Bourne Identity (2002), Children of Men (2006), The Killer Elite (2011, an upcoming action film with Jason Statham and Robert De Niro)).  In this romantic drama loosely based on Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte, Mike Nichols (The Graduate (1967), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), and others) has assembled an articulate group of attractive actors with the end result being, as Kenneth Turran of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “a bunch of sad strangers photographed beautifully”.  Nevertheless, for their performances in Closer, Clive Owen did win both a BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, and Natalie Portman, a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.  (PR)
