* The Expendables – Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li & Mickey Rourke

Posted by the editors on Monday, 6 February 2012

The Expendables (2010) – Directed by Sylvester Stallone and starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li,  Mickey Rourke, Bruce WillisArnold SchwarzeneggerDolph Lundgren and others.  This unabashed action film with quite a few of the great action stars old and new, follows a group of elite, and perhaps a bit worn out, mercenaries on a mission to Central America.  And though it received a mixed critical reception, it did quite well at the box office.  And for reason.  As one could expect, and even hope, for this sort of film, there’s an A to Z of automatic weapons, fiery explosions, and bone-breaking hand to hand combat and it offers a tender pleasure to see the grandfathers of contemporary action films together, wrinkles and all, giving it a good go.  Of course, and being rather kind, the story isn’t much, but that’s not the point in films of this genre, is it.  With all its exploding heads, and other flying body parts, The Expendables is not for the weak at heart, or those who won’t suspend their moral judgement, almost a non sequitur when it comes to this sort of film.  Nevertheless, for a testosterone-filled action film, with at least one moment of soul searching, in an excellent scene with Mickey Rourke,  The Expendables could be worth watching. The A-Team – Starring Liam Neeson & Bradley Cooper

Posted by the editors on Friday, 23 December 2011

The A-Team (2010)  Directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces (2007)), starring Liam Neeson (Michael Collins (1996), Kinsey (2004), Chloe (2009))Bradley Cooper (The Hangover (2009), Limitless (2011)), Quinton Jackson, and Sharlto Copley. The A-Team, an action film based on a U.S. television series, received mixed reviews and middling box-office success, which, honestly, is surprising.  Lacking a coherent story, and anything more than the most cursory character development, The A-Team is a series of generally unimpressive explosions, at best.  Of course, there are Bradley Cooper’s blue eyes, and Liam Neeson repeatedly attempting to smoke a cigar, but, aside from that there is little or no reason to watch the film, unless one is, for some unfathomable reason, a fan of the original, already dubious, television series. Predators – Starring Adrien Brody, with Laurence Fishburne

Posted by the editors on Saturday, 17 December 2011

Predators (2010) Directed by Nimród Antal, produced by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City (2005), Planet Terror (2007), Machete (2010)), and starring Academy Award-winning Best Actor Adrien Brody (The Pianist (2002)The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Midnight in Paris (2011)), Laurence Fishburne (The MatrixThe Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions (1999-2003))Topher GraceAlice BragaWalton GogginsDanny TrejoMahershalalhashbaz AliOleg Taktarov and Louis Ozawa Changchien.  In this science fiction action drama, the fifth in the series of ‘Predator’ films, a group of diverse and deadly human predators (mercenaries, murderers, assassins and such) find themselves parachuted onto a game reserve planet, and in their turn hunted, for sport, by true Predators.  From the free-fall opening, to the final struggle, except for a slower interlude with Laurence Fishburne which perhaps could have been left out altogether, Predators is without a doubt action-packed, with some very good fight scenes, sharp directing by Antal, with the impeccable production values brought by Robert Rodriguez of Grindhouse renown, bringing the film back to some of the style and impact of the original, which starred, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Adrien Brody, though not quite the taciturn hulk offered by Schwarzenegger, is surprisingly good, as are most of the rest of the cast.  The special effects are strong and one must say that, though it’s not much more than an adrenaline- and testosterone-filled entertainment, Predators is a tense, largely effective, action film. Drive Angry – Starring Nicolas Cage

Posted by the editors on Tuesday, 6 December 2011

Drive Angry (2011)(DVD)   Directed by Patrick Lussier, starring Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Adaptation. (2002)).  This action film, with clear grindhouse aspirations, starring cars, guns, gruesomely gratuitous violence, a pointless story, generally disappointing special effects, even in 3D, and bad acting all around, including on the part of Nicolas Cage.  Cage, whose acting has never been especially broad and deep (though he does have his fans), may have hit an all-time low here, but is in keeping with the rest of the film, which falls so far short of a Robert Rodriguez (Desperado (1995), Sin City (2005), Machete (2010)), raunchy, violent, campy, bad taste, yet edgy production that the only reason to write a review of Drive Angry is to warn potential viewers not to waste their time.  See the real Grindhouse (2007; Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof) instead. Surrogates (Clones)

Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis, theatrical poster

image: Wikipedia

Surrogates (2009) (DVD) Directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)), starring Bruce Willis (Twelve Monkeys (1995), The Sixth Sense (1999), Sin City (2005) and others, including Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction (1994), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (to be released in 2011) and others in the Mission: Impossible film series).  Based on the graphic novel (comic book, to some) of the same name by Robert Venditti.  Surrogates, a sci-fi/action film with rather slick effects and a potentially intriguing storyline, relies a bit too heavily on relatively boring action and its poor script for even Bruce Willis, who can be quite good in this sort of film, to redeem it.

Today’s virtual reality avatars taken a couple of (for now, fictional) steps further. (PR)

We recommend that you buy your DVDs and Blu-ray disks.  Have a wonderful personal library.
