Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor*, Rock Hudson & James Dean, movie poster

Giant (1956) (DVD) Directed by George Stevens, starring Elizabeth Taylor*, Rock Hudson, James Dean and others, including Dennis Hopper (Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Easy Rider (1969), Blue Velvet (1986)), Carroll Baker (Baby Doll (1956), The Carpetbaggers (1964), Andy Warhol’s Bad (1977)) and Mercedes McCambridge (All the King’s Men (1949), Johnny Guitar (1954), The Exorcist (1973)). Giant, an epic drama of more than  3 hours, was James Dean’s last film; in fact, Dean died in a car accident during post-production work on the film.

Giant looks at, among other themes, racism, the family, morality and aging, and the, then, new-found, exorbitant wealth brought about by the American oil-producing industry.

Elizabeth Taylor is wonderful as Leslie Benedict, Rock Hudson is quite good as her husband, Texan cattle-rancher Jordan “Bick” Benedict, James Dean is in full flower of Method Acting as Jett Rink, Dennis Hopper, as Taylor and Hudson’s son (!!), Jordy, seems, on the other hand, out-of-place.  George Stevens won the Academy Award for Best Director, for Giant, in 1956.

*It should be noted, sadly, that Elizabeth Taylor, died today at the age of 79.  Here is link to images of Elizabeth Taylor, found on Google.

We recommend that you buy your DVDs.  Have a wonderful personal film library..
