Training Day – Starring Denzel Washington (Oscar for Best Actor) & Ethan Hawke

Posted by the editors on Wednesday, 21 December 2011

Training Day (2001)  Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Tears of the Sun (2003), Shooter (2007)), starring Denzel Washington (Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), Inside Man (2006), American Gangster (2007)) and Ethan Hawke (Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), Total Recall (2012))with Eva MendesDr. DreSnoop DoggMacy Gray and others.  In Training Day, a brutal, tense police thriller set in the gang-lands of contemporary Los Angeles, Denzel Washington is magnificent in the role of Alonzo Harris, a charming, violent and intensely corrupt undercover narcotics detective, who is eventually victim of his own over-reaching confidence and brutal methods, a portrayal for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor; Washington’s virtuosity as he teases, threatens, persuades, teaches and abuses almost all at the same time, is impressive indeed.  Ethan Hawke is very good as Jake Hoyt, not exactly the totally naive newcomer, yet in training with the corrupt Harris (Washington), and shocked, disgusted, confused and abused by Harris and eventually, unable to tolerate the lawlessness and physical menace, reacts by reaching back and reconnecting to his own morality.  Training Day has, for the most part, an authentic sounding script with some quite colorful charactisations by a group of well-known musicians and supporting actors, and some fine directing on the part of Antoine Fuqua. Though the final third of the film is perhaps a bit less accomplished, Training Day is a sharp, tense and gritty thriller, well worth watching. (PR)

About Schmidt – Starring Jack Nicholson

Posted by the editors on Sunday, 18 December 2011

About Schmidt (2002)  Directed and co-written by Alexander Payne (Election (1999), Sideways (2004), The Descendants (2011)), starring Jack Nicholson (As Good as It Gets (1997), The Departed (2006), and many others).   In this award-winning comedy-drama (Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, as well as Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture), Jack Nicholson is magistral as a disillusioned and depressed, retired and widowed 66-year old ex-insurance executive, struggling to find meaning in his life.  Spiced with moments of comedy, from slapstick to ridicule, About Schmidt, is, in fact, a bittersweet drama with an unfortunate and superficially sentimental ending.  Nevertheless, a box-office and critical success, About Schmidt is definitely worth viewing for the excellent, restrained portrayal offered by Nicholson. See our posts on the films The Pledge, starring Nicholson and directed by Sean Penn, and As Good as it Gets, for which Nicholson won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Predators – Starring Adrien Brody, with Laurence Fishburne

Posted by the editors on Saturday, 17 December 2011

Predators (2010) Directed by Nimród Antal, produced by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City (2005), Planet Terror (2007), Machete (2010)), and starring Academy Award-winning Best Actor Adrien Brody (The Pianist (2002)The Darjeeling Limited (2007), Midnight in Paris (2011)), Laurence Fishburne (The MatrixThe Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions (1999-2003))Topher GraceAlice BragaWalton GogginsDanny TrejoMahershalalhashbaz AliOleg Taktarov and Louis Ozawa Changchien.  In this science fiction action drama, the fifth in the series of ‘Predator’ films, a group of diverse and deadly human predators (mercenaries, murderers, assassins and such) find themselves parachuted onto a game reserve planet, and in their turn hunted, for sport, by true Predators.  From the free-fall opening, to the final struggle, except for a slower interlude with Laurence Fishburne which perhaps could have been left out altogether, Predators is without a doubt action-packed, with some very good fight scenes, sharp directing by Antal, with the impeccable production values brought by Robert Rodriguez of Grindhouse renown, bringing the film back to some of the style and impact of the original, which starred, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Adrien Brody, though not quite the taciturn hulk offered by Schwarzenegger, is surprisingly good, as are most of the rest of the cast.  The special effects are strong and one must say that, though it’s not much more than an adrenaline- and testosterone-filled entertainment, Predators is a tense, largely effective, action film. As Good as It Gets – Starring Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear

Posted by the editors on Saturday, 26 November 2011

As Good as It Gets (1997)(DVD)  Directed by James L. Brooks, starring  Jack Nicholson (Chinatown (1974), Terms of Endearment (1983), Ironweed (1987), About Schmidt (2002), The Departed (2006), and many other films)Helen Hunt (Pay It Forward (2000), Then She Found Me (2008))Greg Kinnear (Nurse Betty (2000), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Flash of Genius (2008)) and Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Boyz n the Hood (1991), Jerry Maguire (1996), American Gangster (2007)).  In this  thoroughly amusing romantic comedy, Jack Nicholson is magnificent as Melvin Udall, a misanthropic romantic novelist with obsessive-compulsive disorder, a role for which he deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Actor (1998) and  Helen Hunt, winning the Oscar for Best Actress (1998), is really very good as Carol, a waitress, and over-protective single mother.  Greg Kinnear is great as Simon Bishop, a dog-owning gay artist and Melvin’s (Nicholson) next door neighbor.  As Good as It Gets, classic nasty Nicholson, a critical and box-office success, though flirting with the difficult subjects of homophobia, psychological disorders and the difficulties of being a single parent, nevertheless succeeds in being an enjoyable, if somewhat sentimental, comedy.
