Sonatine

Original theatrical release poster

Sonatine, 1993, (DVD), directed by Takeshi Kitano, with Beat Kitano, Aya Kokumai, and Tetsu Watanabe.  Inspired, funny, rigorous, lyric, violent, sweet, Sonatine is, in fact, a wonderful film, cinematographically, in its scenario, its acting and more.  Simultaneously very contemporary, as well as acknowledging more than an inspiration from the films of Kinji Fukasaku (notably Sympathy for the Underdog (1971)), Kitano’s directing and his acting are clear, fresh, sophisticated without being pompous, and an inspiration, certainly to Tarantino, among others.  To see now, and to see again, whenever you want. (PR)

We recommend that you buy your DVDs.  Have a wonderful personal film library..

(Editors’ note: It is very difficult to obtain Sonatine. Here it is, with another great film, ‘Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman’, not quite the ‘samourai’ film you might expect..)
