The Spanish Prisoner (1997) Written and directed by David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Heist (2001)), starring Steve Martin (The Pink Panther (2006)), Ben Gazzara (The Big Lebowski (1998), Paris, je t’aime (2006)), Campbell Scott (Off the Map (2003), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012, filming), Rebecca Pidgeon (Red (2010)) and others. The Spanish Prisoner, a suspense drama, with excellent, Hitchcockian twists and turns, and an amusingly proper dialogue, is based, in many ways, on a con game of the same name, wherein an innocent victim is, through seemingly friendly affiliation, taken for his worth. The acting is oddly stiff, yet somehow effective: Ben Gazzara is stiffly Gazzara, Campbell Scott, son of actor George C. Scott and actress Colleen Dewhurst, is stiffly, primly, the Boy Scout, Rebecca Pidgeon, in fact Mamet’s wife, is, crikey, nothing if not a Girl Scout a bit over-eager for a merit badge, Steve Martin, thankfully relatively subdued, is nevertheless, though primly, Steve Martin. Or not. And that’s where the fun begins. Not without its faults, The Spanish Prisoner is, despite a few predictable, or not, twists and turns, even so, really quite good. (PR)
