About Schmidt (2002) Directed and co-written by Alexander Payne (Election (1999), Sideways (2004), The Descendants (2011)), starring Jack Nicholson (As Good as It Gets (1997), The Departed (2006), and many others). In this award-winning comedy-drama (Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, as well as Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture), Jack Nicholson is magistral as a disillusioned and depressed, retired and widowed 66-year old ex-insurance executive, struggling to find meaning in his life. Spiced with moments of comedy, from slapstick to ridicule, About Schmidt, is, in fact, a bittersweet drama with an unfortunate and superficially sentimental ending. Nevertheless, a box-office and critical success, About Schmidt is definitely worth viewing for the excellent, restrained portrayal offered by Nicholson. (PR)
