Christopher Petkanas has written an interesting article entitled “Photographer Who Broke Molds” in the Arts section of The New York Times looking at British bad-boy photographer David Bailey’s 1960s persona and his current, less than well-received, forays into art, notably sculpture. However mediocre or uninspiring Bailey’s current work may be, there’s no denying the important role his work, and his attitude, played in shaking up the high quality but rather staid world of fashion photography in the 1960s. And yes, the character played by David Hemmings in Michelangelo Antonioni’s iconic and rather wonderful1966 film ”Blow-Up“, is largely based on Bailey, with additional inspiration from a couple of other photographers of the same epoch.
